A POST mortem on a baby boy who died after being abandoned outside a Mosque in Stoke on Trent has been unable to establish a cause of death.

The baby boy was found in a bag by members of the Makki Masjid, in Shelton, Stoke-on-Trent at 10.40am on Saturday 6 March.

Police said further tests will be carried out.

Staffordshire Police said they were still eager to trace the baby’s mother.

DCI Phil Bladen, who is leading the investigation, said: “Finding the mother, and offering her the help and support she undoubtedly needs, is our absolute priority.

“A team of detectives are studying Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) footage, carrying out door to door enquiries and issuing leaflets in the community with a view to finding the mother.

“Members of the public are urged to come forward with any information they may have, regardless of how small or insignificant it may seem.

“We have everything in place to help the mother. However upset, distressed and frightened she is, I would urge her to come forward. We can help.”

An Independent Police Complaints Commission has also launched an investigation into why it took 45 minutes for officers to rush the baby boy to hospital.

IPCC Commissioner Rachel Cerfontyne said, "The death of any baby is a tragedy, and this case is deeply saddening. It is important that the IPCC independently investigates the initial response by Staffordshire Police to ascertain the actions taken by police to ensure that all correct procedures were followed.”
